When we started Golden Age & Living Ability (GALA), we didn’t begin with an app, or even a product. We began with conversations.
Real, raw, and emotional conversations with daughters, sons, partners, and friends doing the invisible work of care. People who are showing up — day after day — to keep their loved ones safe, nourished and dignified. Often at the cost of their own health, their careers, and their peace of mind.
These stories weren’t easy to hear. But they were honest. And they’ve shaped everything we’re building.
We’ve spoken to caregivers, care providers/Personal Support Workers (PSWs), and families across Canada. And what we keep hearing — again and again — is this: "I’m tired. And no one sees me."
One caregiver we met — a 39-year-old marketing professional — is juggling a full-time job, raising kids, and caring for her elderly parents. She said something that stayed with us: “It’s guilt. I’m not doing enough for her. I’m not doing enough for my family.”
Families are drowning in a fragmented, outdated elder care system that demands everything before care even begins. Waitlists, inconsistent home support, confusing navigation — the system is exhausting.
We’ve heard from PSWs too. One PSW told us about the growing burnout that they experience. “It’s a lot — physically and emotionally. And the pay doesn’t reflect the work.”
They’re overwhelmed. They’re undervalued. And they’re doing some of the most important work in our society.
What we’re learning is that caregivers and care providers don’t need another app with a dozen features. They need simplicity. They need a partner who can help them navigate care with honesty, with clarity — and without making them feel like they’re failing. That’s what GALA is about.
We're not just building another platform — we’re building a community. Every part of GALA is shaped by the voices we’ve heard. If a feature doesn’t save caregivers or PSW's time, reduce their stress, or help them feel more confident — we won’t include it.
GALA isn’t about assumptions or technology for technology’s sake. It’s about people. Real ones. With real needs. We are on this journey together, building GALA together.
